Supercharge Your Supervision Skills:
Play Therapy Supervision from a Neuroscience Lens
Presented by Johanna Simmons, RCC-ACS, BCRPT-S, Certified Synergetic Play Therapy Supervisor & Helen Ritchie, RPT, CCC, BCRPT-S, Certified Synergetic Play Therapy Supervisor
6 Non-contact CEs/CEUs
Workshop Description:
Neuroscience is increasingly teaching us that as supervisors we can be affected by the stories our supervisees share about their clients. This can lead to vicarious traumatization and burnout if we do not take care of our nervous systems. We also need to support our supervisees in learning how to take care of their own nervous systems.
This workshop will show supervisors how to use the nervous system to not only prevent burnout but also how to use the information the nervous system provides them to enhance and deepen the supervision experience for both the supervisor and supervisee.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the states of the nervous system, its regulation and co-regulation, and the 4 threats to the brain.
- Support the supervisor to develop a deeper understanding of one’s own biases, nervous system responses, emotional triggers and physical reactions when supervising therapists who use play as a modality. Encouraging self-reflection and self-awareness facilitates this aim.
- Use this understanding to inform and enhance your supervision as well as the supervisee’s clients’ therapeutic growth.
- Understand emotional regulation and enhance the ability of the supervisor to regulate and model regulation of their emotions ensuring:
- a regulated space for the supervisee
- a safe, collaborative, and constructive environment for the supervisee
- a model for the supervisee to use with their child clients.
- Promote cultural sensitivity and awareness of cultural differences in nervous system responses and recognize how they may influence interactions in a diverse client population.
- Build resilience and prevent supervisor burn-out associated with vicarious trauma by using self-regulation and self-awareness to manage the emotional demands of the role, thereby modeling the same for the supervisee.
- Learn the effective use of the neuroscience and regulation/co-regulation as an add-on to the play therapy interventions or modalities currently used.
WHO MAY BENEFIT FROM ATTENDING:
We welcome both new and seasoned supervisors! This workshop is geared toward those who supervise play therapists/therapists who work using play. Others who may benefit from this workshop are those who help support or want to learn more about how to help support others who work with children, adolescents, and families.
