BC Play Therapy Association holds workshops throughout the year to help advance the education of Play Therapy Practitioners and related professions. These usually revolve around a specialized speaker teaching a subject of importance to the advancement of play therapy as a therapeutic practice.

Two-Day IN-PERSON Workshop
Friday & Saturday, February 7 & 8, 2024, 9:00am – 4:30pm

Workshop Description:
This two-day course will consist of a combination of lecture, group discussion, and many experiential activities as participants learn about the application of attachment theory to play therapy through the use of sandtray. Time will be dedicated to understanding the relational neuroscience involved in using an expressive play modality like sandtray to treat attachment trauma. This workshop can be applied to work with clients of various ages as well as individual, couple and family, and group treatment. Experiential learning will be prominent so be aware that you may encounter sensitive information when practicing the expressive techniques.
Learning Objectives:
Workshop participants will learn:
- Discuss overlapping histories of attachment theory and sandtray/play therapies
- Describe methodology of attachment-based play therapy through use of sandtray materials and techniques
- Discuss the perspectives offered by the relational neurosciences on expressive play therapy (in the sandtray)
- Apply attachment-based play therapy interventions in the sandtray
- Structure play therapy parent consultations that set parents up for sandtray success
- Apply sandtray-based protocols to play therapy treatment planning with children, adults, and systems
- Discuss person of the sandtray therapist implications when doing attachment healing
- Apply attachment-focused case conceptualization for family play/sandtray therapy clients
WHO MAY BENEFIT FROM ATTENDING:
Play therapists, children’s counsellors, family therapists, family counsellors, psychologists, social workers, school counsellors, and other mental health professionals working with children, adolescents, and families will benefit from this training. A basic understanding of play therapy would be beneficial.
About the Presenter:
Marshall Lyles, LPC-S, LMFT-S, RPT-S, EMDRIA Approved Consultant, has over 20 years of practice in family and play therapy. He has extensive speaking and training experience and has worked in a variety of mental health settings. Most of Marshall’s clinical practice has focused on attachment trauma and its effect on family relationships. Marshall conducts consultation sessions with counseling professionals and leads training for both parents and professionals; much of his consultation and training focuses on the use of sandtray and other expressive therapies for those impacted by trauma. He is EMDR-certified and TBRI-trained and uses these with foster and adoptive families. As Marshall is nearing the completion of his Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy, he is able to pursue his passion for non-academic writing like poetry and he is currently pursuing certification as a poetic medicine practitioner.
